How to share a referral invite thoughtfully

Recommend the app because it fits someone’s work, then let them decide whether to join.

A practical guide from Kontextual

The short answer

Send a referral invite to someone who would actually use the app, say why you thought of them, and leave the decision with them. A personal recommendation is more useful than a link sent to everyone in your contacts.

App feature preview

The referral steps below describe a newer iPhone build. The version currently on the App Store may differ.

1. Think of one person and one reason

Maybe a colleague meets people at events and struggles to remember what they promised. Maybe a friend is building a small professional network and wants their notes and follow-ups in one place. Those are reasons to mention Kontextual. A reward by itself is not a reason to interrupt someone.

Keep the invitation separate from a professional introduction. A referral invite recommends an app; an introduction asks two people whether they want to meet. Neither should assume consent just because you know both parties.

2. Add a note they can answer honestly

Send the link through a channel you already use with that person. A sentence about their actual work gives them enough context to decide. Avoid implying that they owe you a signup because you would earn credits.

A fictional example

“You mentioned losing track of people after design meetups. I use Kontextual to keep a short note and the next thing I promised. Here’s my invite if you want to try it. No pressure if your current system works.”

That note names a problem the friend raised and gives them an easy way to decline. If they are interested, they can ask how you use the app. If they are not, let it rest; repeated reminders turn a recommendation into a campaign.

3. Explain the reward accurately

In the newer iPhone referral flow, your friend creates a new account and claims your personal invite within seven days of creating it. Once an eligible claim succeeds, each of you receives 25 credits. Opening the link or sharing it is not itself a claim. An existing account is not eligible for the new-account reward.

Referral credits join the same credit pool as other credits. They do not unlock a feature outside someone’s plan, and they expire at the end of the following month. These terms are useful to mention if you bring up the reward; they keep the invitation honest.

4. Keep the choice with the recipient

You choose who receives your link. The referral flow does not upload your address book to find people to invite. A public invite does not reveal your account details to someone checking whether the code can be used.

The app shows a completed referral count and credits earned, but not a list of people who received or opened your link. You cannot infer that someone joined just because you used the share sheet. If you need to know whether a friend found the app useful, ask them directly rather than treating referral activity as a relationship signal.

Sharing from Kontextual

Open Profile, choose Refer a friend, then use Share invite to send your personal link or copy it into a message you write yourself. The friend follows the invite, creates an account, and completes the claim. If the invite is unavailable, try again later rather than sending an unverified code.

The referral is a starting point, not the relationship. If you meet someone through an event, our follow-up guide covers what to do after the conversation.
